Christian X (1870-1947) reigned in Denmark between 1912 and 1947 and also Iceland between 1918 and 1944. King Christian was a true royalist and fought hard to maintain the royal power in Denmark, even though democracy was on the move in the country. King Christian’s fight for power hardly added on to his popularity, but by having reigned Denmark throughout two world wars and his becoming a heroic symbol for Danish nationalism and resistance during the Nazi-era, he eventually became one of the most popular monarchs in modern time Denmark.
The Danish 10 and 20 kronor coins were first minted in 1873, in connection with Denmark’s abandoning of the silver standard. Instead Denmark signed a monetary agreement with Sweden, an agreement stating production of gold coins of a specific weight and fineness. The Danish gold coins carried the portrait of the current ruler, which started with King Christian IX in 1873. The coins portraying Christian X were minted during the years 1913-1917.
