USA Liberty Double Eagle

The twenty-dollar Liberty Double Eagle issued between 1849 and 1933 is sometimes called the "King of American Coins." Since the $10 gold coin was called the "Eagle", $20 coin quickly became known as the "Double Eagle". Please don't confuse them with the modern gold eagle bullion coins made since 1986.

Almost an ounce of gold is contained in the $20 Liberty Double Eagle, which is part of the reason why so many coin collectors are drawn to this piece. During the time of the $20 Liberty’s issue, the official price of gold was $20.67 an ounce. The gold content of the Double Eagle was fixed at 0,9675 oz, equaling its $20 value in gold weight.

These coins were one of the building blocks of the growing U.S. economy and financial markets in the 19th and 20th centuries. $20 Liberty gold coins were used in every aspect of American economic life, from the average guy on the street to multi-million dollar international financial transactions.

Obverse: The bust of Lady Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY". Thirteen stars surround the bust, representing the original American colonies. Date is positioned below.

Reverse: A heraldic eagle grips an olive branch, the classic symbol of peace, while military prowess is symbolized by a bundle of arrows. Rays of light emanate from the eagle's wings. Above the eagle is a circle of thirteen stars, once again symbolic of the original colonies and statement, "In God We Trust". "E Pluribus Unum" is inscribed on the beak of the eagle. Double Eagles from 1877 to 1907, have the denomination "TWENTY DOLLARS" spelled out.
