Several countries have issued 1oz investment gold coins that are sold based on the market price of gold and at very low brokerage. The Eagle is the American version of such a coin.

The History of the Eagle

Eagles were launched in 1986. The first Eagles (1986-1991) had the date imprinted in roman numerals, but since 1992 only Arabic numbers have been used. Eagles are considered the most beautiful among gold coins.

The History of the Eagle coin family

Golden American Eagles are coined from 917 proof gold in four sizes – 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. In addition to gold, each coin also contains silver and copper to strengthen and protect it against wear and scratching. American Eagles are legal tender of the USA, and have a guarantee of purity from the federal government. As common among gold coins, their nominal values (5$, 10$, 25$ and 50$) are mostly symbolic and they do not reflect the real value of the coins, as the price of gold has greatly exceeded the nominal values of gold coins throughout history.

A new version of the historic design

The production of modern Eagles started in 1986, but their design relies on the first gold coins produced in the USA (since 1795). The first gold coins with the eagle design had a nominal value of 10 dollars and they were called Eagles as well. Double Eagles were $20 gold coins while half and quarter Eagles respectively had nominal values of $5 and $2.50. When the United States of America introduced a new series of gold coins, it was considered natural that the eagle design be continued.

The design of the Eagle

The obrverse side features the full image of the statue of liberty of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (the Liberty Lady) with her flowing hair, the torch in the right hand and the olive branch in the left.

The reverse side carries an image of a male eagle landing on its nest, carrying an olive branch. A female eagle with recently hatched eaglets is in the nest. This image symbolises American family values and traditions.
